Google Chrome has dominated the browsing landscape as the go to browser not only for many devices but for the general public as well. As of June 2025, chrome has a significant market share of 68.32%, Safari has 16.25% and Edge has 4.97%. But, it seems that both perplexity and OpenAI has decided to once again shake the market by launching their own browsers. While we wait for the launch news of the OpenAI’s browser and are excited to see what it has on offer, Perplexity has just launched it’s browser i.e. Comet which is available either to the subscribing users or to the selected invites. There is a waitlist and no official news on when it will be available for the general public to use.

Few months back OpenAI launched its web search within the same interface which focused on generating the relevant content based on the exact information available on the internet with the source of the information provided to the users.

It is being said that OpenAI’s web browser aims to use artificial intelligence to change how people browse on the internet. The plan of both OpenAI and Perplexity is to hit Google’s main source i.e. the user data and is expected to fast track Googles plans as they had to do with the hasty launch of Bard which later on became Gemini and AI Overviews. After the AI revolution back in mid 2022 with the launch of OpenAI, this is the biggest news that might send some shockwaves.

Perplexity on other hand launched it’s browser Comet with some good amount of features that might entice users to try it out and they are committed towards improving the search experience as a whole and initiate a paradigm shift in browsing. Let’s look a bit into detail on what Comet is and what does it hold.

Perplexity Comet

Perplexity started with creating a dedicated page for the comet browser which can be accessed here: https://comet.perplexity.ai/

They have presented Comet as a browser which is Personal, Powerful, and Productive in a sense which can remember what you browsed and cater the users with it’s proprietary AI model making it an Agent who can do the work for the users so that the users can not lost in the tabs-remembering battle. So much so, that it’s said that Comet is equipped to understand your prompt and open the relevant tabs from the past. It’s like saying Comet to “open the roast chicken recipe I was browsing last week”.

Perplexity Comet is built by keeping user personalization in mind. It will learn how the user browses, thinks, and will provide the results likewise assisting the users in making an informed decision.

One such feature which is expected to be a boon is the summary of the search where the users would be able to ask for the summary of the information they search for and Perplexity Comet will summarize the information runtime and right there to give the users a synopsis about the search they make. This feature can be found of Comet’s website as well. If you scorll down to the planets sections, it will provide the summary.

Currently, Perplexity Comet is only available for the Mac and Windows platform which is expected to be available to other platforms soon as well. There might be a plan for the mobile platforms of Android and iOS as well.

At the backend, Comet is using the Perpexlity’s search engine for fast, accurate, and optimized content.

Perplexity Comet might be soon available for the free user but, for now, it’s available to only the Perplexity Max subscribers and few invite-only users as we saw above in the blog.

Perplexity Comet will surely improve the shopping experiences of the users as it wouldn’t be only a search engine but, a search engine clubbed with the Agentic experience where users would be able to ask the queries from their search, favourited items and open tabs and Comet will summarize the content to answer the user queries. Imagine asking a search engine “which would be the best and cheapest bike for me from the ones I have searched”. This is nothing but magic.

The SEO and marketing industry is also set to be disrupted by this and it will require the marketers to pull their socks up and start thinking about how to make sure that this paradigm shift from Google doesn’t affect their clients and themselves. Strange times ahead.

We are yet to get an idea about what OpenAI’s web browser will contain. Exciting times ahead as we wait for the announcement from OpenAI which is expected anytime soon this year.

Conclusion

Google Chrome and Google itself, no longer holds the only seat on the table. Competitors are knocking the doors and are determined to ensure that the year long monopoly is disrupted and the online becomes more decentralized in it’s true sense. As we keep on using Comet, more things will be discovered which we will be glad to bring it to you. Until then, for any of your technical requirements, please feel free to contact Nimblechapps.
