This is Gulshan Saiyed, HR Generalist at Nimblechapps for the past three years. I am writing this blog to briefly mention the lessons that I have learned from an Exit Interview.

Before I start, let me just quickly brief you on the importance of an Exit interview.

An Exit interview is always as important as an initial hiring interview. It serves as an informative tool to learn where the company can improve itself. Also, it gives the employer a sense of understanding as to why an employee is walking out of the door.

There can be n number of reasons for an employee to leave an organization. Despite the condition under which an employee is leaving, the organization must deliver a consistent and positive goodbye because an exit interview can help an organization determine the pulse of the existing workforce.

Now let me tell you facts that employees prefer to discuss and disclose in their exit interviews.

First and foremost, the exit interview can give insight into what works or what will not work in the organization. If an organization cannot prevent an employee from leaving, at least an exit interview can help the organization to improve employee engagement and to understand what went wrong and how they can make things better for existing and future employees.

The important thing that an exit interview reveal is the most genuine feedback of each and everything about or within the organization.

A departing employee will be more genuine when giving feedback, both positive and negative, and exhibit truthful feelings about their time at the company. An employee speaks the most honest fact about his experience in all the manner, whether about the policies, environment, any fellow employee, and mishappening held with the employee in his time irrespective of how recent it is.

Secondly, an exit interview helps the employer identify their weak areas. At some time, the employer is clueless about a fact that has created room in the employee's head. An existing employee would, in most cases, prefers to avoid speaking about the facts which they feel are disturbing them. But an exit interview allows the employee an opportunity to speak and discuss what was not right in their opinion. And what may be the reason for taking this walk? A departing employee can act as a good source of finding out the correct temperature of the company.

Lastly, the fact that no matter how tough or free an environment the company has, the only or one of the major reasons to leave is the financial growth within the organization. Maybe the employee put plenty of reasons in his resignation letter. During an exit interview, 90% of the employee revealed that they were not satisfied with the salary they had. Recently a departing employee mentioned that the finance would not be a problem if the employer knew what and how much to charge from the client so that they may fulfill their employee's demand. We must value the resource for putting in their hard time, and we must drill ways to meet their financial necessities.

To conclude the entire experience, I would say that an exit interview can help the company to change the environment by changing policies and management styles in accordance with the employee's opinion. And these changes will provide a sense of value to the existing and future employees.
