Why don’t we at Nimblechapps have any prefix for any title or profile?
In many geographical or work cultures addressing someone without a prefix or a suffix like ‘Sir or ‘Ma’am’ has been considered disrespectful for decades. But, we human beings have skipped noticing that usage of these honorific words at the workplace creates relationship gaps and a sense of ‘unlikeness’ towards co-workers, which in turn, affects work and the work culture.
Having that healthy professional relationship and work ethic with someone is considered more respectful than addressing someone with ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am.
Think of this - Why are we all given names if we must address one another as ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am’? (Haha)
Following is why we - Nimblechapps encourage our fellow work companions to address each other with their First name or Nickname.
1) To remove the feeling of superiority.
Just because some have been born into this world before others or have gained more experience in their career - doesn’t make them superior to their younger ones or less experienced ones. All age groups with different levels of knowledge must be treated equally when it comes to ‘respect.’
Calling each other with their first name or nickname is embracing each other professionally as equals at all levels.
2) To create a friendly work culture.
There is always hesitation in asking for help from someone with whom you feel inferior. Removing the feeling of superiority leads to a friendly bonding which leads to a friendly work culture where everyone supports each other to grow.
This also eliminates the so-called “office politics.” Why? Well, when everyone feels comfortable with each other and knows each other, there is no room for grapevine or blame games.
3) To encourage professional friendships.
Yes, they do exist! Professional friendship is different from personal friendship. Let’s not get confused or interchange the two.
Professional friends help in professional growth, know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and respect each other's boundaries. A professional friend will never get involved in personal matters unless it is very much needed. They sit together for lunch, get along on weekends, and pursue certifications together and yet might not know each other's salary, number of family members, hardships of their career, etc.
Believe it or not, everyone likes to be addressed by their first names but sometimes, because some don’t find themselves with like-minded co-workers, they tend to follow undesirable norms set by those co-workers.
We at Nimblechapps have been experiencing great outcomes with creating this culture and encourage you as a reader to be the change around you. Try it in your work culture and see the change yourself. See more people work for you, with you!
