In this example we will develop Card views and architecture to simulate the Tinder Swipe Cards without using Any third party library.

Objectives of this Tutorial

  1. We would be creating the swipe Card view as used in Tinder. i.e. Swipe right is considered liked and swipe left is considered unlike.

Now our code for uploading is ready.

Step 6: activity_mail.xml

In our activity_main.xml, we have a button to upload the image to Dropbox.

We have stored the path and URI of the image in shared preference.

So use this button and inside the onClickListner of the button, call the async task that is the file UploadFileTask.

After this code, Open your DROPBOX APPLICATION installed on your device, and reload it.

You can see the uploaded file there.

This is how we use DROPBOX API V2. If you are using API V1, The Shift to V2 as V1  is deprecated and doesn't work.

We are using MongoLab to create MongoDB databases and collections. It is a cloud database service that hosts MongoDB databases.

Login to MongoLab https://mlab.com/login/. If you don’t have an account, create an account and login. Congratulations!! You have created your own database and a collection in MongoDB.

Get your API key

Copy that API key and save it somewhere. Later you need to use this in your project.

And on the same page you can see a field “Data API access”. If it’s value is disabled, click over the button “Enable Data API access” to enable the API access. Now we are ready to proceed further.

Saving the data into the MongoDB collection

Till this point, we created a Database and a collection in it. Our next step is to save the data into the MongoDB. As already discussed, data will be stored in the form of Documents, which contains the JSON format data. There are two ways to save the data in the MongoDB. We will look at both.

One way is, saving the data directly in MongoLab.

There is an option to create a database in MongoLab, as similar to that of creating a collection and Database.

The other way is doing Networking calls and save the data in the given URL. Okay… Let’s begin our coding part.

As a first step, create a new Project in Android Studio.

I would like to store First Name, Last Name and Phone number information in my MongoDB. Hence create a Class named MyContact as below that defines these data fields. It is a POJO class.

Now create another class SupportData, which can be used for having a database, collection names, your API key and the URL where you are going to save the data. Have the below code snippet.

From the above picture, you can observe that I have three edit texts for first name, last name and phone number. And also you can see one save button and one fetch button. My concern is, when I click save button, the user entered data in the edit text fields has to be stored into the MongoDB collection named “Contacts”, which I have created earlier.

Include the below code snippet for save button action in your MainActivity.class. And include AsyncTask method to perform Network call in a background thread. Have the below code into your MainActivity.class.

Fetching the stored data from the MongoDB

Be patient for few more minutes, we are almost near to our destination. We are able to save the data in the MongoDB using MongoLab. Now our final task is to fetch that data from MongoDB.

Here I have written one more AsyncTask GetContactsAsyncTask for handling Network call that deals with fetching the data back to our application.

In this example we will develop Card views and architecture to simulate the Tinder Swipe Cards without using Any third party library.

Objectives of this Tutorial

  1. We would be creating the swipe Card view as used in Tinder. i.e. Swipe right is considered liked and swipe left is considered unlike.
  2. As we can see in the video below, there is a lot of stuff happening in the scene. All these are implemented using Card View and Image View.

Card View

  1. Card View is another major element introduced in Material Design.
  2. Card View extends the FrameLayout and it is supported way back to Android 2.x.
  3. A FrameLayout with a rounded corner background and shadow.
  4. Important XML attributes of Card View

  • android.support.v7.cardview:cardBackgroundColor :-> Background color for CardView.
  • android.support.v7.cardview:cardCornerRadius :-> Corner radius for CardView.
  • android.support.v7.cardview:cardElevation :-> Elevation for CardView.
  • android.support.v7.cardview:cardMaxElevation :-> Maximum Elevation for CardView.
  • android.support.v7.cardview:cardUseCompatPadding :-> Add padding in API v21+ as well to have the same measurements with previous versions.
  • android.support.v7.cardview:contentPadding :-> Inner padding between the edges of the Card and children of the CardView.
  • android.support.v7.cardview:cardPreventCornerOverlap :-> Add padding to CardView on v20 and before to prevent intersections between the Card content and rounded corner.

How to add Card View?

To use the Card View in your app, add the Card View dependency in build.gradle and Sync the project.

Now let’s see this in action by creating a new project:

  1. Create a new project in Android Studio from File? New Project. When it prompts you to select the Empty activity, and proceed.
  2. Open build.gradle and add Card View, which is used to display the Cards.
  3. Create a model class denoting the UserDataModel properties like name, number of Likes and image. So create a class named UserDataModel.java and add the below code.

Click app -> New -> Java Class

  1. We also need an XML layout to display the card. Create an xml layout named custom_tinder_layout.xml under res ? layout. Here you can notice that I have added <android.support.v7.widget.CardView> and added all the UserDataModel properties like name, number of likes and image inside it.

  1. Open the layout files main activity activity_main.xml add Relative Layout
  2. Open the res/drawable and create new drawable file btnlikeback
